Learn about owls
Dec. 10, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Soldiers Delight Natural Environmental Area in Patapsco Valley State Park, 5100 Deer Park Road, Owings Mills. Participants will follow a naturalist on a one-mile hike and listen for and try to call out owls. There will be a discussion of biology, habitat, diet and conservation. For families and individual adult patrons. Meet at visitor center. Ages 16 and up unless joined by an adult. Call 410-461-5005 to sign up. Cost: $5 per person.
Dec. 15, Patapsco Valley State Park, Hilton Area. Children 4 and older may join their parents and other hikers on an easy three-miler through the woods, along the river and across a swinging bridge to Cascade Falls and the Hilton Tire Park. Small hills and stream crossings. Wear layered clothes and sturdy shoes. Bring water, snacks and lunch. $2 guest fee for non-Mountain Club of Maryland members. Winter solstice hike
Dec. 22, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Gunpowder Falls State Park, 10500 Belair Road, Perry Hall. Celebrate the shortest day of the year with an evening hike guided by a park ranger. Md. Half Marathon
Registration is open for the fifth annual Maryland Half Marathon to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. The race will be May 11 in the Maple Lawn community of Howard County. Registration costs $75 until Jan. 31, $85 in February and $90 from March 1 to May 11. The Dozer's Kids Fun Run is $15.
