MSSA speaker

Nov. 26. Marty Gary of the sport and tidal fisheries advisory commissions at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will speak at the monthly meeting of the Perry Hall Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportsfishermen's Association at 7:30 p.m. at Gunpowder VFW Post 10067, 6309 Ebenezer Road, 21220. Learn about owls

Dec. 10, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Soldiers Delight Natural Environmental Area in Patapsco Valley State Park, 5100 Deer Park Road, Owings Mills. Participants will follow a naturalist on a one-mile hike and listen for and try to call out owls. There will be a discussion of basic biology, habitat, diet and conservation. Captive owls from the aviary will be on hand for educational assistance. Suitable for families and individual adult patrons. Meet at visitor center. Rain or shine. Winter solstice hike

Dec. 22, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Gunpowder Falls State Park, 10500 Belair Road, Perry Hall. Celebrate the shortest day of the year with an evening hike guided by a park ranger. This three-mile rugged hike is through rough and varied terrain. Bring your own headlamp or flashlight, water, and dress appropriately. Pre-registration is required. Call: 410-592-2897. Maryland Half Marathon

Registration is open for the fifth annual Maryland Half Marathon to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. The race will be May 11 in the Maple Lawn community of Howard County. Registration costs $75 until Jan. 31, $85 in February and $90 from March 1 to May 11. The Dozer's Kids Fun Run is $15. Prepare for hunting

Patuxent Research Refuge North Tract hunting permits are on sale Mondays through Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bow qualifications are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 p.m. to dark; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Hunting Control Station is on Bald Eagle Drive, off Routes 198 and 32. Information: mnha.net.
