Trolling for rockfish

Nov. 14: Lenny Simmons of Len Dawg Tackle will discuss tips and tactics for late summer/fall trolling for rockfish, including bottom-bouncing techniques and structure fishing, when he addresses the Northwest chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall at 1010 Frederick Road, Catonsville. Nov. 19: Mountain Club of Maryland Quarry Trail 8-mile hike is a mixture of fire roads and foot paths that includes trails along the shoreline south of Liberty Road and the south side of Liberty Dam. Prettyboy hike

Patapsco Valley hike

Nov. 26: Mountain Club of Maryland 8-miler in Baltimore County from the Southwest Park and Ride to Oella. A few stream crossings, and several steep but relatively short climbs. Will visit Thistle Road Cemetery. Short car shuttle. Details: 410-536-5080.

Lefty Kreh’s Tie Fest

Feb. 24-25: Blane Choklett and Pat Cohen will be among the workshop presenters at the 18th annual Lefty Kreh’s Tie Fest on Feb. 24-25 on three floors of the Lowes Annapolis Hotel at 126 West St. in Annapolis. Admission will be $10 for each of the two days or $15 for both days of the expanded event. Anglers 16 and younger and active military personnel will be admitted free. Choklett, a fly designer for Umpqua Feather Merchants, will demonstrate the gummy minnow and the game changer, an articulated fly he created. Cohen, a New Yorker, is a member of the pro staff for 10 fishing companies, including EP Flies and Partridge of Redditch Hooks. Other fly tiers attending include Steve Silverio, Brad Buzzi, Bob Popovics and Richard Stolis. Jerry Kustich, co-founder of Sweetgrass Rods, will discuss bamboo rods. Bob Clouser will run fly-casting demonstrations, and attendees will be able to test several fly rods provided by event vendors. Some workshops carry an extra fee. Among the no-charge seminars will be ones by Joe Bruce on snakeheads and Kevin Josenhans and Chris Karwacki on fishing Tangier Sound. Tie Fest will include displays from fly shops in the Chesapeake Bay area, local fishing guides and angling organizations. Attendees will be able to purchase supplies and discuss fishing strategies with these vendors. Tickets will be sold at the door.
