Boating safety

Thursday: The Coast Guard will give a one-hour presentation on boating safety as part of the MSSA's Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association's youth fishing seminar series. Starts at 6 p.m. Free. Hurd 5K Run

Saturday: The Fifth Annual Heather L. Hurd 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Walk will take place at 9 a.m. at Harford Community College. The race honors the memory of Heather L. Hurd, a history major at the school from 1999 to 2003, who was killed in 2008 by a distracted driver who was texting. On-site race registration takes place in the Susquehanna Center auxiliary gym from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Information: go to harford.edu/heather or call 443-412-2449.

Invasive species

Nov. 12: Department of Natural Resources Inland Fisheries manager Mary Groves will discuss invasive species, in particular blue catfish and flathead catfish, in the Chesapeake watershed, at the November meeting of the Northwest chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association. The meeting at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall at 1010 Frederick Road in Catonsville will begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:45. Use the Beaumont Avenue (side) entrance. Hunter sight-ins

November: The Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association will host rifle and shotgun hunter sight-ins on club grounds at 3400 Northwind Road in Carney on Nov. 9, 16 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and on Nov. 17 and 24 from noon to 3 p.m. Information: Call Robert Batchelor, at 410-592-9276.

Turkey shoot

Nov. 17: The Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association will host a turkey shoot from noon to 4 p.m. on club grounds at 3400 Northwind Road in Carney. Prizes include turkey, ham and bacon. For more information, call Greg at 410-598-4970.

Hunter safety

Nov. 20-23: The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels is offering a four-day hunter safety course with Maryland DNR-certified hunter safety instructor Ed Henry. Successful completion of the course, which runs from 6 p.m. to 9 the first three nights at Van Lennep Auditorium, then 9 a.m. to noon on the Saturday, earns participants a Maryland certificate of competency in firearms and hunter safety. Striped bass tourney

Nov. 23-24: The 21st annual Chesapeake Bay Fall Classic, the bay's largest fall striped bass tournament, is open to recreational anglers, professional fishermen and charter boat captains. The base fee is $175. The 2012 payout was $90,000. Information: mssa.net/fallclassicregistration.

Maryland boat act

Dec. 2: The Maryland Boat Act Advisory Committee will meet to review any proposed regulatory requests for 2014, to accept recommendations from the nominating committee for the office of chairman, vice chairman, and officer at large, and to be briefed on any proposed legislation affecting boating in Maryland. Winter solstice hike

Dec. 21: Celebrate the shortest day of the year and the official first day of winter with a free hike from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gunpowder Falls State Park in Baldwin in Baltimore County.
