Hiking season kickoff

May 5, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Appalachian Trail Conservancy will celebrate the arrival of the spring hiking season at the Visitor Center, 799 Washington St., Harpers Ferry, W.Va. Experienced hikers will give presentations on long-distance hiking, kids will have the opportunity to get temporary A.T. tattoos, and gear displays will illustrate day-hiking and backpacking basics. Mud run

May 6, 9 a.m., Savage. Terrapin Adventures has partnered with Playworks DC to host the Terrapin & Hare 5K Mud Run. The woodsy course includes climbing walls, tires, webs and mud obstacles. Registration is $35. Information: terrapinmudrun.com.

Careful Catch

May 8, 7:30 p.m. Chesapeake Bay Foundation senior naturalist and outdoors writer John Page Williams will be the guest speaker at a Northwest Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association meeting. He'll discuss the Careful Catch program and CBF's State of the Bay report as it applies to anglers. The meeting will be at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall at 1010 Frederick Road, Catonsville. Please use the Beaumont Avenue (side) entrance. Oriole Day celebration

Fly fishing fair
