Navy should get reinforcements for Senior Day

When Aaron Santiago fell awkwardly and broke his left arm in two places in a 40-14 win at Western Kentucky on Sept. 10, some thought the senior slotback might have played his last game for Navy. When Kriss Proctor felt his left elbow pop out of place for the second time this season two weeks ago against East Carolina, the senior quarterback looked like he was done for awhile, too.

Both were at practice Monday in Annapolis and both are expected to play Saturday on Senior Day when Navy (2-6) tries to break its current six-game losing streak when it hosts Troy (2-5).

The Midshipmen have lost every game they've played without Santiago, who scored two touchdowns in the season opener against Delaware and one before getting hurt against Western Kentucky. Proctor sat out last Saturday's 56-14 loss at Notre Dame.

The return of the two seniors will be a boost for a Navy team in the midst of its longest losing streak since 2002. The Midshipmen need to win their last four games to become bowl eligible.

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said that he was "very surprised" that Santiago has made it back this quickly, but added "typical Aaron, just worked hard in the training room."

Said Santiago, "After I got hurt, the doctors told me that I would be done until spring, but I thought otherwise and kept pursuing it."

Niumatalolo said that he would continue to monitor Proctor's progress during practice this week, but said, "I was encouraged by what he did today."

Proctor said he would be "game ready" despite some residual soreness in the elbow on his throwing arm. Proctor admitted that he didn't throw more than "5-to-10-yard" passes and is still going for treatment up to six times a day. Sophomore Trey Miller made his first start against the Fighting Irish.

Niumatalolo also said that he would continue with senior kicker Jon Teague, despite the fact that Teague missed badly on a 47-yard field goal in the first quarter against Notre Dame. It was the ninth time this season that Navy has missed on either a field goal or PAT.

"The one thing I came away with from our kicking is that Jon is clearly our best kicker," Niumatalolo said, adding that Teague connected on all 13 of his field goals and PATs in practice Monday
