Maryland advances to ACC semifinal with 2-1 win

All-Atlantic Coast Conference players Megan Frazer, Harriet Tibble and Jill Witmer each recorded a point to lead third-seeded Maryland past sixth-seeded Duke, 2-1, Thursday in the ACC tournament quarterfinals in Chapel Hill, N.C. Frazer and Witmer scored, and Tibble had an assist on Witmer's game-winning goal with 16:35 remaining. Maryland (15-4, 3-2) will play second-seeded Virginia (15-4, 4-1) today at 3:30 p.m. in the semifinals in Chapel Hill.


Seven from area in hunt for High School Heisman

Seven student-athletes from Baltimore-area schools were among 20 statewide named Maryland finalists for the 19th annual Wendy's High School Heisman Award. Samantha Bingaman, South Carroll; Kristen Douglas, Carroll Christian; Adam Greene, Broadneck; Kyle Hawkins, Liberty; Cole Rosenberg, Hammond; Cristiana Salvatori, Notre Dame Prep; and Abby Smucker, C. Milton Wright, were chosen because they "embody the Heisman spirit of hard work and dedication through their outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community/school leadership," according to a news release.

Football: Dunbar's Lawrence Smith was named Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Opening the school's new William F. "Sugar" Cain Field last Friday, he led the Poets to a 64-0 victory over visiting Carver to improve their record to 8-1.
