Win earns Terps ACC women's soccer berth

The Maryland women's soccer team (10-9-0, 6-7-0) earned a 3-1 victory over visiting Pittsburgh (4-14-1, 0-13-0) to secure an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament bid. The victory, along with Wake Forest's 2-1 loss to North Carolina State, sends the Terps to the ACC tournament, in which they will play at top-seeded Virginia on Sunday as the No. 8 seed. Redshirt sophomore Alex Doody contributed two goals in her first career multigoal game, and senior forward Hayley Brock also scored on Senior Night.

More women's soccer: Junior Hannah Kronick of Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 7 in Division III, was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District II team.

Men's soccer: Leading scorer Pete CaringiIII (Calvert Hall) is considered doubtful for No. 7 UMBC (12-1-2, 3-0-2 America East) in Saturday night's game at UMass Lowell (3-12-1, 1-3-1). Caringi, a senior forward who leads the Retrievers in goals (10) and points (22), suffered a concussion Saturday in a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Binghamton. UMBC already knows it will be without senior midfielder Kadeem Dacres, second on the team with six goals and 15 points, who was given his fifth yellow card of the season Saturday and must serve a one-game suspension.

More men's soccer: Navy senior midfielder Dave Arnold (Mount St. Joseph) and senior defenseman Zach Davis, the team captain, received Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District II first-team honors. ... Host Navy (11-3-2, 7-0-0 Patriot League) extended the nation's longest active winning streak to 10 games with a 2-1 victory over Lehigh (2-12-1, 1-6-0) on Wednesday night. ... ... Salisbury sophomore goalie Drew Staedeli (Mount Hebron) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II team.

Football: Johns Hopkins senior strong safety John Arena has been selected to the 16-member National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Class. Arena, a co-captain, is both the first Hopkins player and the first Centennial Conference player selected for the award. Arena has a 4.0 cumulative GPA and will graduate in December with a degree in neuroscience.

Wrestling: Navy named two-time NCAA qualifier Lloyd Rogers an assistant coach. Rogers, who competed at Tennessee-Chattanooga, served as an intern with the Iowa wrestling program and as the Eastern Iowa Wrestling Club coach for the past year.

Women's swimming: St. Mary's junior Brooke Raab (Hereford) and Salisbury's Victoria Radcliffe (Howard) were named Capital Athletic Conference Co-Swimmers of the Week for competition ending Sunday.

Dutton, Meurer selected Ohio State lax co-captains

Ohio State senior goalie Greg Dutton (Calvert Hall) and defenseman Joe Meurer (McDonogh) will serve as lacrosse captains next season. Dutton is a two-time All-Eastern College Athletic Conference second-team selection and was a 2013 ECAC All-Tournament team choice. He was 16th nationally in goals-against average (8.96). Meurer was voted the team's Defensive Most Valuable Player in 2013 and was a USILA Honorable Mention All-American and an All-ECAC first-team selection.

Lacrosse recruiting: Chesapeake-Anne Arundel junior attackman Pat Brennan has committed orally to UMBC. The 5-foot-7, 140-pound recruit had 47 points in each of his past two seasons, earning second-team All-County honors. … South River junior midfielder Grant Maloof picked Towson. Maloof helped the Seahawks finish second in the state last season.

Inside Lacrosse

Varsity lacrosse: Boys' Latin finished second to Ward Melville High of Long Island, N.Y., in fan voting with 29 percent of the vote for Inside Lacrosse's Laxie award for High School Team of the Year. Loyola came in third and also finished third for Upset of the Year for a 10-9 win against Boys' Latin in May's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship game.

Varsity: Twenty Maryland finalists for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award were announced, including five from schools in the Baltimore area: Meade's Jessica Zhao, South Carroll's Kendall Noel, Reservoir's Amaya Phillips, C. Milton Wright's Ryan Pellegrino and Manchester Valley's Kyle Johnston.
