Digest (Sept. 16): Chublicious tastes win in De Francis Dash at Laurel Park

David Gruskos' multiple stakes winner Chublicious, dismissed as the longest shot in the four-horse field, collared stubborn front-runner Blue Moon Ace in mid-stretch and emerged with a neck victory in the $250,000 Xpressbet Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) Saturday at Laurel Park. The 26th running of the 6-furlong De Francis for sprinters 3 and up was the highlight of a 12-race Fall Festival of Racing program that featured seven stakes, six stakes over Laurel's world-class turf course, worth $900,000 in purses. Chublicious ($22.40) ran the distance in 1:08.75 over a fast main track to edge Blue Moon Ace, with multiple Grade 3 winner Whitmore, the 1-2 favorite, 1½ lengths back in third, four lengths in front of another multiple graded stakes winner, Awesome Banner.

Laurel undercard: Wise Gal, bred and owned by Eric Wirth and trained by Dove Houghton, drove away from her opponents impressively down the stretch to win Saturday's $100,000 Selima Stakes, the first of seven stakes at Laurel Park. ... On Leave benefited from a dream trip on her way to a length victory in the $150,000 All Along Stakes, providing a hometown victory for her prominent Maryland owner and breeder, Stuart Janney III. ... Quiet Winter Farm's Snowday, narrowly beaten in his graded stakes debut just 12 days earlier, forged a short lead approaching the wire and emerged from a four-way blanket finish with a head victory in the $100,000 Fidelity First and Blackwell Real Estate Laurel Dash. ... Oak Bluff Stables' Therapist overcame erratic behavior before the start of the $100,000 Laurel Futurity, straightening out in the stretch to prevail by a head.


Freshman's score helps Stevenson to soccer win

Freshman Allison Arters scored her second goal this season while senior Lauren Spivey (Sparrows Point) scored her seventh career goal as the Stevenson women's soccer team posted a 2-0 non-conference victory over Frostburg State. ... Lexi Pelafas scored three goals to power Central Michigan past Mount St. Mary's, 4-2. ... Hood earned its fifth win, 1-0 over Marymount. ... Elizabeth Johnson scored 43 seconds into the match to lift Catholic past Salisbury

College field hockey: No. 3 Salisbury (4-1) posted its fourth shutout of the season, defeating host Cabrini, 3-0. ... Senior Clare Kavanagh had ahat trick to lead Johns Hopkins to a 7-0 win over Bryn Mawr. ... St. Mary's lost, 2-1, to Roanoke.

Men's college soccer: Hood defeated Rosemont Ravens, 2-0, getting a goal and an assist from freshman Kyle McQuillen. ... For the third consecutive game, Stevenson senior Jake Brown (John Carroll) recorded at least nine saves as the Mustangs battled Catholic to a scoreless double overtime tie at St. Alban's School.

College volleyball: Johns Hopkins swept both Bryn Mawr and Goucher, 3-0. Morgan Wu o set a program record in the first match against Bryn Mawr with 13 aces.
