Navy punter Beltran named preseason All-Independent
Navy junior punter Pablo Beltran was selected preseason first-team All-Independent by Phil Steele in his College Football Preview magazine. Sophomore quarterback Keenan Reynolds, junior center Tanner Fleming, junior guard Jake Zuzek, senior kick returner Marcus Thomas and junior punter returner Shawn Lynch were named to the second team. Junior fullback Noah Copeland, senior offensive tackle Graham Vickers, senior defensive end Evan Palelei, senior linebacker Cody Peterson, junior corner Parrish Gaines and junior kicker Nick Sload were named to the third team.
Mount's Quaranta is NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Recently graduated Mount St. Mary's baseball player Mark Quaranta (Loyola) was selected as the Northeast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Since the inception of the award in 2006-07, Quaranta is the third Mount athlete to win the honor and the second in two years, joining Michael Foster. Quaranta excelled in the classroom with a 3.98GPA while majoring in economics and business. For his efforts, he was named a first-team Academic All-District 2 selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Men's college basketball: After one year at the Virginia Military Institute, former Atholton guard Gavin Stephenson is transferring to South Carolina Aiken. As a freshman at VMI, Stephenson averaged 2.2 points and 1.3 rebounds in 22 games. Because he is transferring down a level to a Division II program, he will be able to play immediately as a sophomore. Stephenson averaged 23.1 points and 6.1 rebounds as a senior at Atholton, earning first-team All-Howard County honors.

Women's soccer: Former Navy defender Nicole Auanapu (Mann), 35, is among NASA's new group of potential astronauts. She is one of eight candidates who were selected from more than 6,100 applicants to be the agency's newest trainees. The candidates will begin training at Johnson Space Center in Houston in August.
