State basketball: Navy men top Bryant; Loyola women win

Bryant went cold down the stretch Monday while host Navy stayed hot, helping the Midshipmen to a 69-59 victory in men's basketball.

The Bulldogs (5-4) led 52-51 after a layup by Vlad Kondratyev with 6:42 left in the second half. But then they went more than six minutes without a field goal as the Mids regained the advantage with a 16-4 run to pull away.

The Mids (6-6), who shot 56 percent from the field (24-for-43), including 55 percent from 3-point range (6-for-11), were led by Kendall Knorr's 15 points, while Tilman Dunbar, the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, had a doubledouble of 13 points and 10 assists. James Loupos chipped in 11 points and Brandon Venturini had 10 for the Mids.

Joe O'Shea led four Bulldogs in double figures with 15 points. Corey Maynard had 13, while Kondratyev had 11 and Alex Francis each had 10 as the Bulldogs shot just 39 percent from the field (21-for-54).

Navy led by as many as six points in the first half, but Bryant, powered by two 8-0 runs, went into intermission with a 29-28 lead.

The Bulldogs outrebounded the Mids 34-24.

Women

Loyola 53, Army 47: Katie Sheahin scored a game-high 25 points for the visiting Greyhounds, who defeated the Black Knights in a matchup of future conference foes. Jen Hazlett finished with 19 points for Army (8-2). Loyola improved to 5-6 on the year, including three victories over Patriot League teams.

Hazlett carried the Black Knights with her 7-for-13 shooting performance, including 5-for-7 from outside. Army shot 30.9 percent (17-for-55) as a team.

After Army made its first three attempts from the floor, the Greyhounds surged to a 15-0 run as the Black Knights missed their next 14 field-goal attempts. Army went without a field goal between 16:10 and 5:55 in the first half, helping Loyola to a 29-18 lead at intermission.

Army fell to 1-4 all-time against Loyola, which is slated to join the Patriot League for the 2013-14 season.
