C.J. Brown, Jerry Lovelocke named to Unitas Award watch list

C.J. Brown first arrived at Maryland in 2009, a three-star, dual-threat quarterback from Pennsylvania who then-coach Ralph Friedgen saw as a future star. Now, as Brown enters his sixth year in College Park, he finally is expected to live up to those expectations.

Brown, who was redshirted his first season and sat out two more with injuries, is one of 27 players named to the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given annually to the country's top senior or fourth-year quarterback. As a graduate student, Brown is technically neither. But his numbers in 2013 — his first year as a full-time starter — were solid, as he threw for 2,242 yards (seventh-best in the Atlantic Coast Conference) and 13 touchdowns for a quarterback rating of 135.9.

Brown was joined on the list by Baltimore native Jerry Lovelocke of Prairie View A&M, another dual threat, who threw 23 touchdown passes and rushed for nine more last season. Lovelocke was recruited by local schools such as Towson and Morgan State coming out of Edmondson but ultimately opted for the Texas-based Panthers instead.

Prairie View, which plays in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, went 5-4 last season.

The award will be presented by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Foundation on Dec. 12 at the Embassy Suites Baltimore Inner Harbor.
