Wizards president plans to keep Arenas, Jamison
Not surprisingly, Gilbert Arenas' blog was the first topic of conversation at Washington Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld's "state of the team" news conference yesterday.
"We're on the same page, then. Because we want to sign Antawn [Jamison]. We want to sign Gilbert," Grunfeld said. "I kind of liked it. He's supportive of his teammate. And he enjoys playing with Antawn. And that's been our plan all along. I'm glad to see everyone in the organization is on the same page."
Arenas, a three-time All-Star guard who missed most of the season after two operations on his left knee, has long said he plans to opt out of his contract. He said on his blog Wednesday if Jamison doesn't return, he's not staying with the Wizards, either. Jamison, a team co-captain and two-time All-Star forward, is set to become a free agent.
"Our intent all along has been to have both of those players back and to keep our core together," Grunfeld said.
• Pistons // Chauncey Billups said he was still sore, a night after he was forced to leave the Pistons' loss to Orlando in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals because of a strained right hamstring. The All-Star guard said he isn't sure if he will be ready to play in Game 4 tomorrow in Orlando.
• All-NBA Team // Los Angeles' Kobe Bryant was voted to the first team for the third straight season and sixth time in his career. Joining Bryant on the first team were New Orleans guard Chris Paul, Boston's Kevin Garnett, Cleveland's LeBron James and Orlando center Dwight Howard.
• Bucks // Point guard Mo Williams had surgery to repair ligament damage in his right thumb and is expected to be ready for training camp in October. Williams started the first year of a six-year contract worth $51.5 million by averaging 17.2 points and a career-best 6.3 assists in 66 games.
• Nets // New Jersey promoted Kiki Vandeweghe to general manager, less than six months after being hired as a special assistant to team president Rod Thorn. Vandeweghe replaces Ed Stefanski, who left in midseason to become the GM of the 76ers.
