New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada, scratched from the starting lineup just before the team's 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians yesterday because of more shoulder problems, said after the game that he is headed to the disabled list for the first time in his career.
"It's very disappointing," said Posada, bothered by a sore right shoulder for weeks. "It's probably the most disappointing thing in my career."
Posada first complained about a tired arm April 8 and didn't catch for two weeks, hoping the rest would strengthen his shoulder. He caught the series opener Friday and the last four innings Saturday after he hit a tying, three-run triple as a pinch hitter.
Posada said he felt pain in his shoulder after a throw Saturday. He is expected to visit famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
Posada has caught at least 137 regular-season games each year since 2000.
• Umpire injured // Umpire Kerwin Danley was released from a hospital early yesterday in Los Angeles, about five hours after he took a 96 mph fastball to the right side of his jaw - briefly losing consciousness when the pitch from Dodgers right-hander Brad Penny slammed into his face mask. Danley, a native of Los Angeles, was resting comfortably at the home of his mother, who attended Saturday night's game, an 11-3 victory for the Dodgers over the Rockies, and rode with him in an ambulance to the hospital. "I just talked to Kerwin on the phone. He was fine, and he'll be back," umpire Greg Gibson said.
• Indians // Center fielder Grady Sizemore didn't play in the team's loss to the Yankees after rolling his ankle while running the bases in Cleveland's win a day earlier. Sizemore had played in a major league-high 382 consecutive games.
• Red Sox // Designated hitter David Ortiz was out of the starting lineup for the second consecutive game against the Rays with a bruised right knee. Ortiz was hurt while diving into first base in the final inning of Friday's 5-4, 11-inning loss to Tampa Bay.
• Braves // Right-hander John Smoltz left the team's 6-3 loss to the Mets with what he called "discomfort" in his throwing shoulder. Smoltz started the season on the disabled list with tightness in the back of the shoulder.
• Pirates // Matt Morris, the veteran right-hander added by Pittsburgh late last season to stabilize a young rotation, was released after he failed to pitch past the second inning in the Pirates' 8-4 loss to the Phillies on Saturday night. Morris fell to 0-4 with a 9.67 ERA.
• Mets // Outfielder Moises Alou will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging today to try to determine the cause of swelling in his left ankle. On the 15-day DL after hernia surgery, Alou has been in extended spring training in Florida.
• Giants // San Francisco could be without starting pitcher Kevin Correia for a month after the right-hander was placed on the 15-day DL with a left oblique strain.
