The Sun remembers: Sept. 30-Oct. 6

Oct. 4, 2004: "It feels good," Priest Holmes declares after rushing for 125 yards and two touchdowns in the visiting Kansas City Chiefs' 27-24 upset of the Ravens, defending AFC North champions, in a "Monday Night Football" game. Holmes, a former Raven, was not re-signed by the team after the 2000 Super Bowl and went on to star for the Chiefs.

Oct. 6, 1991: The Orioles bow, 7-1 to the Detroit Tigers in their last game at Memorial Stadium (b. 1954) before an announced crowd of 50,700. Afterward, 78 former Orioles take the field before home plate is dug up and whisked by limousine to Camden Yards, the Birds' new home. "They can't erase the moments we had, can they? That's the great part," slugger Boog Powell says. "We all have memories of this place, and they'll never go away."

Oct. 6, 1968: Backed by an announced 60,238 — the 31st straight sellout at Memorial Stadium – the Colts defeat the Chicago Bears, 28-7. Quarterback Earl Morrall riddles the Bears for four long touchdown passes, two to Jimmy Orr and one each to John Mackey and Willie Richardson, as the Colts (4-0) roll toward a 15-2 finish and a Super Bowl berth.

Oct. 6, 1966: Jim Palmer, 20, pitches his first career shutout in defeating the Dodgers, 6-0, and the Orioles leave Los Angeles leading the World Series two games to none. Several thousand fans meet the Birds at Friendship (now BWI Marshall) Airport at 1:30 a.m. and follow the team bus downtown in a caravan numbering hundreds of cars.

Oct. 4, 1958: Johnny Unitas passes for four touchdowns and Lenny Lyles returns a kickoff 103 yards as the Colts (2-0) outlast the Chicago Bears, 51-38.

Oct. 5, 1957: Sixth-ranked Navy suffers its only loss of the football season, a 13-7 upset at North Carolina as the Tar Heels intercept five of Tom Forrestal's passes. It's a big win for Carolina's Jim Tatum, who'd coached Maryland to a national title in 1953. Navy will finish the year 9-1-1, with a Cotton Bowl victory over Rice.

Oct. 3, 1953: Dick Nolan scores twice, on a 90-yard punt return and a 65-yard pass reception, as Maryland stops Clemson, 20-0. It's the second of six shutouts the Terps will record in this championship season. Nolan will later play for the New York Giants and serve as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.

Oct. 3, 1931: Trailing 6-0 late in the game, Maryland drives 50 yards for a touchdown and then kicks the extra point to defeat Virginia, 7-6. To the triumphant "Old Liners," Senator Millard E. Tydings hands a silver bowl, which goes to the winner of the annual rivalry. It's the second victory of the year for Maryland, which will finish 8-1-1.

Birthday

Oct. 3, 1980: Anquan Boldin, Ravens wide receiver.
