Six years ago, to celebrate the 175th anniversary of The Baltimore Sun, reporter Mike Klingaman compiled a list of the top 175 athletes who were either born in or raised in Maryland, or who competed in the state for at least three years. No. 1 was perhaps no surprise.
Now, with the help of the Babe Ruth Museum, The Sun is looking to enshrine the four athletes who belong on the state’s Mount Rushmore. Readers can vote for up to 10 of the 20 candidates through Feb. 14. Another round of voting will help determine the final four.
Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were selected for sculptures in the 1920s because of their significance to American history. Should success in the state be weighed differently from birth in the state?
Go here, mull your choices and make your pick.
