An epic title match

Covering the Ravens in the fall and college lacrosse in the spring gives me a unique opportunity to meet colorful personalities and witness great sports moments. The Ravens’ season-opening rout of the Pittsburgh Steelers was memorable for a team that had its run in the 2010 playoffs end because it could not protect a 14-point halftime lead against its AFC North arch-nemesis. Months of anticipation and anxiety turned into joy in the Ravens’ locker room after the game, which could be a season-defining moment for this current group of players. But the one story that continues to resonate with me was watching the Maryland and Virginia men’s lacrosse teams battle for the national championship. Both squads overcame numerous emotional hurdles to reach that stage. The Terps had adjusted to a new coach after Dave Cottle resigned following the 2010 campaign and then dealt with the death of senior attackman Ryan Young’s mother. The Cavaliers faced suspensions and tragedy, including the indictment of former midfielder George Huguely in the murder of women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love. It’s a shame that only one could walk away with the 2011 title, which Virginia did. -- Edward LeeGene Sweeney Jr., Baltimore Sun
