The Ravens haven't drafted a quarterback since taking Joe Flacco 18th overall in 2008. With Troy Smith and John Beck gone and Marc Bulger set to become a free agent, there is a decent chance the Ravens will take a quarterback for the first since they decided the lanky kid Delaware with a rocket arm was their guy for the future.
“It’s probably not going to be in the first round, but if there’s a [quarterback] available that we like, we’ll pull the trigger if we think he’ll make us better,” Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta told the team's website.
That's not to say the Ravens are looking to replace Flacco, nor should they be. But at 26, he is no longer a kid, and the Ravens might draft a quarterback that they can eventually cultivate into an asset a few years from now (kind of like what the Eagles did with Kevin Kolb).
And if Bulger walks, the Ravens will need to find a new backup for Flacco, who hasn't missed a start in his NFL career. The team has signed Hunter Cantwell to a future contract, but we don't know if he is capable of leading the team should Flacco gone down. Chances are Cantwell isn't.
I'm not sure which college quarterbacks have caught the eye of DeCosta and his staff, but Florida State's Christian Ponder, Iowa's Ricky Stanzi and, yes, Delaware's Pat Devlin could be available in the middle of the draft. But let's wait and see how the QB pecking order shakes out after the pre-draft workouts get going.
