The Orioles’ bad luck on the baseball field has expanded into the team’s promotions department, which unfortunately is having a banner homestand for ill-timed fan giveaways (by no fault of their own, of course).
On Saturday night, the Orioles treated fans to Brian Matusz bobblehead night, which came a month after the young left-hander was demoted to Triple-Norfolk. The same thing happened to Nolan Reimold last year.
Tonight, the first 15,000 fans age 15 and older will receive a Jake Arrieta T-shirt at Camden Yards. Arrieta probably won’t be there, though. The Orioles starter is having season-ending elbow surgery on Friday.
And the Orioles are still reeling from Buck Showalter bobblehead night in June. They are 11-29 since.
In hindsight, are we sure the Orioles didn’t hold Justin Duchscherer floppy hat night during spring training?
To be fair, not all of the Orioles’ promotions have gone wrong. Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy have both gotten love on T-shirt Thursdays, and they have been two of the team’s best players this season. Ollie’s is still in business even though it sponsors Ollie's Bargain Night. And we’ve had no fireworks mishaps to date.
But if I was a Brownie scout, I would think twice about attending next month’s Girl Scout Night. When your livelihood is selling Thin Mints, Tagalongs and Samoas in this economy, you don’t want to tempt the fates.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
