The Orioles haven't had a winning season in 13 years, and they are well on their way to making it 14 this summer. But they are the 13th most popular team in Major League Baseball -- and are on the rise -- according to a recent online poll by Harris Interactive, which surveyed 2,163 adults on the topic between June 13 and 20.
The Orioles came in at No. 20 a year ago and haven’t been ranked this high in the annual poll since 2007.
Polling began a few days after the Orioles swept the Athletics to move within a game of the .500 mark at 30-31. But since voting ended on June 20, the Orioles have gone 3-15 and are 18 games back in the AL East.
Interestingly enough, one percent of Americans polled said the Orioles would win the World Series. I bet if Harris checked the IP addresses they would find out that all those votes came from the Angelos household. There can be no other explanation for it.
Predictably, the Yankees were voted as America’s favorite team for a ninth consecutive year, and they were predictably followed by the Red Sox. The Braves, the Cubs, and the Dodgers and Mets -- those last two teams tied for fifth -- rounded out the top five.
