Michael Phelps reportedly forgot his Speedo on Tuesday night

Pardon the interruption, but if you need a quick break from the non-stop NFL speculation, allow me to pass along an odd story about Michael Phelps, who is having a rough week at the world swimming championships.

The 14-time Olympic gold medalist finally won his first gold at the championships in Shanghai early Wednesday morning, beating Japan's Takeshi Matsuda in the 200-meter butterfly, his “bread-and-butter event.”

"I feel like I'm kind of getting back," Phelps told USA Today. "I felt like my old self. … I didn't feel like I was dying, like I could barely get my arms out of the water, like there was a piano on my back."

Here comes the odd story I mentioned. After Phelps lost to fellow American Ryan Lochte in the 200-meter freestyle Tuesday, it was reported that Phelps showed up to the pool without his trunks.

He had to borrow a suit from Australia’s Eamon Sullivan, who joked on Twitter that Phelps could keep it. This reminded me of an episode of “Seinfeld,” with Phelps posing as Cosmo Kramer.

I’m not sure how much this affected his performance, but squeezing into another man’s Speedo couldn’t have helped. At least Phelps now has an extra suit in case he forgets his again.

*** This post has been updated since its first publication to reflect that he championships are being held in Shanghai, not Beijing. I regret the error.
