This photo, snapped by Karl Merton Ferron of The Baltimore Sun during the third quarter of Sunday night’s 34-14 loss to the San Diego Chargers, was a talker on Monday. It appears to be an animated outburst from Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs directed at coach John Harbaugh after another Chargers touchdown.
Asked about the incident on Monday, Harbaugh basically said, “Huh? What are you talking about?”
With cameras all over the sidelines -- and with tens of thousands of phones equipped with them in the stands -- we’re going to see plenty of moments like this one and like Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s scrutinized spat with one of his coaches earlier in the season. But this wasn’t a Jim Schwartz- Jim Harbaugh moment that our photographer captured. This sort of thing happens all the time on the sidelines.
"I didn't even know there was an issue,” John Harbaugh said. “Pretty much whatever they saw happens pretty much every game, and that's what an NFL sideline is like -- especially when you're trying to fight, dig your way out of a hole. And for me personally, part of our style is to interact with the players throughout the course of the game a lot. And I'm always asking guys what they think or sharing my thoughts or whatever. Whether it's football or whether it's -- if you want to call it motivation or whatever. And then I get a lot of energy from our players.
"We've got a brotherhood. There's no question, it's a brotherhood. When you're a team, a real team -- we are a real team -- and in a sense, we are a band of brothers. And guys are just out there fighting, trying to find a way to get the job done. So, whatever might have been seen, I really think that's what it is."
And if you’ve played sports with your buddies before -- it doesn’t matter at which level -- you know exactly what Harbaugh is talking about. Heated words might be exchanged on a field, a rink, a squash court, whatever. But at the end of the game, you’re still brothers. No big deal. The only difference is that Harbaugh and Suggs probably didn’t hug it out and drink cold beers out in the parking lot afterward like you and I do with our buddies.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
