The list is based on recommendations received through regular mail. The leader among nominees suggested through social media is Lady Gaga, according to the blog post.
In September, the U.S. Postal Service announced that it is dropping a rule requiring that an individual be deceased at least five years before being honored on a stamp. Under the new guidelines, living or recently deceased individuals will be eligible, according to the postal service's news release.
“This change will enable us to pay tribute to individuals for their achievements while they are still alive to enjoy the honor,” Patrick Donahoe, postmaster general, said in the news release.
