Orioles minor leaguer Quintin Berry runs bases, slides into home after ejection

Quintin Berry is fast enough that many of his stolen bases are basically uncontested. In one fell swoop Thursday night with Triple-A Norfolk, he swiped second, third and home plate without even drawing a throw.

It’s too bad the Orioles minor leaguer already been thrown out of the game.

Berry was ejected after singling with two outs in the ninth inning of the Thursday’s loss in Syracuse. The video doesn’t really say what he did to earn it, but the home plate umpire Tom Honec threw Berry out of the game and Berry didn’t take the news well.

The 29-year-old outfielder took the long way back to the dugout, touching second and third before sliding uncontested into home plate. Berry jawed with the umpires on the way back to the dugout, and the Tides went on to lose 5-3.

Last night, manager Ron Johnson told Syracuse.com that he wasn’t sure what happened, and hadn’t spoken to Berry yet.

Were it any other week, I would probably take a shot at what the baseball police in Boston, whom Berry played for last year to earn a World Series title, would think about this.

But Berry is longtime friends with Orioles outfielder Adam Jones. With all the talk of the Orioles playing the game the right way, it’s not the best time to be bringing this kind of attention to the organization—even if it is hysterical.
