MLB Network's Mitch Williams argues with umpire in youth game in Aberdeen

Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams was in Maryland this weekend to coach his son’s under-10 baseball team at a Ripken Baseball tournament in Aberdeen, and according to a report by Deadspin, he channeled his inner Earl Weaver and got ejected for arguing with the umpires. In a youth baseball game.

According to the report, the MLB Network analyst had several issues with the umpire’s decisions during his Jersey Wild team’s game Saturday, and observers told Deadspin that Williams and the umpire got in each other’s face for a big-league style argument before they were physically separated.

There are varying reports as to who was the instigator, and video of the game was not available with the rest of the tournament’s games. But Williams was initially banned from the tournament, then un-banned and welcomed back to the Wild dugout on Sunday.

The in-depth reporting on this event is worth reading, but it seems like all parties were in the wrong here. I’ve encountered both crazy parent/coach and delusional referee in my sporting days, and there’s really no excuse.

But it’s always nice when a player lives up to his nickname. Wild Thing indeed.
