They say everything's bigger in Texas. But is it better?
In sports, it seems, Maryland definitely has the edge, at least in our "totally unbiased" opinion.
Take a look:
Please. Look where the Vince Lombardi Trophy resides right now. The Texans are still trying to find their way, and the Cowboys are a mess, thanks to their meddlesome owner. They lost last week to the Kansas City Chiefs, 17-16, for crying out loud. Everyone talked about the Texans being the AFC team to take the next step last season, but they couldn’t beat the New England Patriots in the divisional playoffs, losing, 41-28. The Ravens easily handled the Patriots in the AFC championship game, 28-13, and we all know what happened in the Super Bowl. The Cowboys' last Super Bowl title came in Super Bowl XXX on Jan. 28, 1996. They did beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in that game, so we’ll give them props for that. EDGE: RAVENS
OK, the Rangers are still ahead of the Orioles in the American League wild-card race, but who would you rather be right now, the Rangers -- who lost seven straight before a win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night -- or the Orioles -- winners of two straight? Remember the wild-card game last year? The Orioles took care of the Rangers. EDGE: ORIOLES
College football: University of Texas vs. University of Maryland
Wow, we wouldn’t want to be Mack Brown right now. The Longhorns are 1-2 after getting pounded by Ole Miss, 44-23, last Saturday. The Terps are 3-0 heading into Saturday’s showdown against West Virginia. Texas plays Kansas State (2-1) on Saturday. EDGE: TERPS
College football: Navy vs. Texas A&M
Sure, you have the Heisman Trophy winner in Johnny Manziel. But you just blew a 14-0 lead against Alabama and ended up losing, 49-42, in one of the more exciting college football games we’ve seen in a while. Navy is 2-0 and has a star quarterback of its own in Keenan Reynolds. So that makes Maryland teams 5-0 and the two Texas teams 3-3. EDGE: EVEN
Does it really matter who you put up from Texas against Phelps? He’s the greatest Olympian of all-time with 18 gold medals and 22 overall medals. EDGE: PHELPS
We consider Camden Yards one of the best athletic venues in the world. The name hasn’t been sold to a sponsor (we like the purity of that), and it’s the model for almost every new baseball stadium. AT&T Stadium is too new to be considered a classic. It does have all of the technological bells and whistles, which is nice, but if you just want to watch a game on a beautiful evening, nothing is better than Camden Yards. EDGE: CAMDEN YARDS
Food: BBQ vs. crab cakes
Not even going to touch this one. We’ll call it a tie and enjoy both. EDGE: EVENCopyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
