Former Maryland linebacker Darin Drakeford signed with the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night, the team announced.

The Falcons cut kicker Sergio Castillo to create a roster spot for Drakeford. Drakeford previously tried out for the New York Jets this year.

After going undrafted last year, Drakeford had practice squad stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts.

At Maryland, Drakeford recorded 171 tackles, 19 for losses, eight sacks, seven forced fumbles and one interception. He played in high school at Thedore Roosevelt High in Washington.

The 6-foot-1, 250-pound player has recorded a 40-yard-dash time of 4.6 seconds and a 30-inch vertical leap.
