Coffee Companion (7/24): Ray Rice suspension loomed large over first day of camp

Well, that was a weird first day of camp. A typically exciting occasion was played under clouds overhead, literally and figuratively, and the action on the field was almost an afterthought. I expect that, and the lack of oppressive heat, will change soon enough. Learn about everything that went down in the Coffee Companion, where we recap the previous day's sports headlines.

- The wait for Ray Rice’s suspension finally ended Thursday, when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced a two-game suspension for the running back. Mike Preston believes the NFL missed a chance to send a message about domestic violence, while Peter Schmuck says a two-game suspension was the best-case scenario for Rice and the team. Public opinion isn’t as split — the NFL is getting crushed.

- Training camp also began for the rest of the team, though that’s been a bit overshadowed. Veteran cornerback Aaron Ross tore his Achilles tendon during his conditioning test and will be out for the year, while fellow corners Chykie Brown and Lardarius Webb had a tough day at the office.

- Manny Machado was out of the lineup again, but Wei-Yin Chen tossed eight shutout innings and Delmon Young hit a three-run home run as the Orioles continued their strong West Coast trip with a 4-0 win over Seattle.

- The Orioles acquired Kansas City utility man Jimmy Paredes for some sort of depth, presumably, but there’s no indication whether their next addition will be Jim Johnson, the team’s former closer who was designated for assignment by the Athletics Thursday.

- Kevin Gausman looks to rebound from his worst start of the season when he faces of with Seattle ace Felix Hernandez Friday night, but already had a big win when he topped Toronto stud Marcus Stroman in a donut-eating contest.
