Coffee Companion (7/23): Orioles win out west again

The Baltimore Sun

One of the problems with West Coast games is not knowing what happened before the morning. I thought I was in some kind of twilight zone with another 4-2 win, but they did it again. Read that and the rest of the morning headlines in the Coffee Companion, where we recap the daily sports headlines.

- Miguel Gonzalez returned from Norfolk to pitch into the eighth inning of another 4-2 win over Anaheim. The Orioles did it without Manny Machado, who is day-to-day with back spasms.

- With the trade deadline approaching, Peter Schmuck doesn’t believe the team should give away the farm for an incremental improvement.

- The main focus, however, was on the Ravens, who spoke to reporters for the first time at training camp yesterday. John Harbaugh didn’t say much about Jimmy Smith’s arrest earlier this month, but did give his expectations on when and what Ray Rice’s discipline might be. Bernard Pierce, who is expected to benefit in playing time from the possible suspension, is fully healthy and looking good in camp.

- Joe Flacco said he’s not going to grade himself on a curve with the new offense, while C.J. Mosley and the rookies are ready to get in pads and show what they can do with veterans around.

- The training camp positional previews neared the end with the special teams portion of the series.
