Coffee Companion (5/5): Chris Davis improving, NFL draft week arrives

Last week's rain seems like it was years ago on this fine Cinco de Mayo morning, but as you arrive at your desk, I'm sure there's not much you'd rather do than not start working just yet. That's why blogger Jon Meoli writes the Coffee Companion, where every morning, Monday through Friday, he recounts the biggest local sports headlines.

- The Orioles dropped out of first place this weekend after losing two of three in Minnesota, and Buck Showalter expressed some concern about the bullpen’s usage since Thursday’s doubleheader. In more positive news, Chris Davis says he’s ahead of schedule in his return from a strained oblique.

- It feels like the NFL Draft has been days away since the Super Bowl, but now it actually is. Our positional breakdown continued with defensive linemen, and the Ravens writers also wrote about the team’s draft strategy and thoughts on small-school players.

- In slightly older news, Maryland guard Seth Allen is transferring, becoming the team’s fifth transfer this spring. Coach Mark Turgeon’s peer on the football side, Randy Edsall, was ripped to shreds when players transferred early in his career. I’m not hearing the same outrage with Turgeon, who is in charge of the school’s marquee program.

- With another Kentucky Derby in the books, it’s clear as it has ever been that this is really the year we get a Triple Crown winner. Really. But in the meantime, Childs Walker details who might face California Chrome in the Preakness.

Same old Spurs

 - It looked as though San Antonio’s run of deep NBA playoff runs may have been coming to an end, but the Spurs’ 23-point win over Dallas in Game 7 ensured they would play on. Earlier in the day, Brooklyn snuck past Toronto to advance to the second round.

- On the ice, the Rangers were shut out 3-0 in Pittsburgh and have to turn around tonight for a fifth game in seven days. Chicago smoked Minnesota 4-1 to take a 2-0 series lead.

- Liverpool and Crystal Palace face off in Premier League this afternoon. Liverpool is level on points with leaders Manchester City, and though City is ahead on goal difference, a Liverpool loss would be crippling to their title hopes.
