Each week, blogger Matt Vensel fires a few questions at rookie cornerback and kick returner Asa Jackson. The Ravens’ fifth-round pick in April’s draft, Jackson is a Sacramento native who played his college ball at Cal Poly.
MV: Let’s talk about your fellow rookies. You guys came in together and are growing up together. Being in the same draft class, have you established a bond with some of these players?
AJ: Yeah, that’s definitely true. That even goes back to all the guys that were in training camp. We got tight as a group, and obviously it sucked to see some of those guys go, but for the guys that are here, we’re all still pretty tight together. We still have to do a lot of stuff together. It’s cool having guys coming in, being in your same situation, that you can kind of share your struggles with. It helps get you through for sure.
MV: I always see you talking and hanging around rookie safety Christian Thompson. Is that a defensive back thing?
AJ: I’m around Chris all the time. He’s good people. He’s a good person. He’s someone who shares some of the same interests that I do. And it makes it cool because he lives three doors down for me. Having him as a friend, and [wide receiver] Tommy Streeter is my roommate, so having guys around, especially for me, someone who doesn’t have family within a couple of thousand miles, it’s important to have guys like them that help made this transition more comfortable.
MV: So let’s do some rookie class superlatives here. Which of the rookies is the funniest?
AJ: Funniest? Man, the funniest one was safety Chyl Quarles, but he’s not here anymore. Chyl was just hilarious. He was a funny person. He was by far the funniest rookie that I have.
MV: What about the smartest?
AJ: Probably [offensive lineman] Jack Cornell. Either Jack or [safety] Omar Brown.
[Blogger’s note: His locker is right by Cornell’s and Brown’s.]
MV: Hardest-working? You’re under pressure now with these guys listening to our conversation.
AJ: Yeah, definitely not Jack or Omar. Hardest-working rookie? Who is the hard-working rookie? I’ll just pick myself so it sounds good.
MV: What about the best style?
AJ: Out of the rookies? Oh, that’s me for sure. It’s not even close.[To interact with Asa, follow him @_KIDRaven_ on Twitter]
