The Detroit Tigers acquired left-hander David Price in a three-way trade with the Seattle Mariners and the Tampa Bay Rays. The Mariners received outfielder Austin Jackson in the deal, and the Rays picked up left-hander Drew Smyly, utility player Nick Franklin and minor league infielder Willy Adames. The folks at Deadspin received an interesting artifact on Thursday -- a 1978 scouting report of Cal Ripken Jr., then a pitcher at Aberdeen.
The report, written by Pirates scout Joe Consoli, includes such gems as "plays SS, but lack of fluid mobility will limit prospect here" (Ripken won two Gold Gloves at shortstop) and "can hit" (with Ripken's 3,184 hits and 431 homers, the scout nailed that one).
Consoli also noted that Ripken had an "intense desire to play," which fits given the Iron Man's streak of 2,632 games played.
