Countdown to No. 1: The Top 175 Maryland athletes in Baltimore Sun history – Nos. 155-136
To celebrate the 175th anniversary of The Baltimore Sun, reporter Mike Klingaman has compiled a list of the top 175 athletes who were either born or raised in the state of Maryland, or who competed here for at least three years.
The athletes are ranked based on their performance, their impact on sports and their lasting resonance with fans. Coaches and managers are not included.

155. Fred Carter, basketball
He was the first black student to attend Mount St. Mary's College, and when he left, in 1969, Carter was the school's No. 2 all-time scorer. A third-round draft pick of the Baltimore Bullets, dubbed "Mad Dog" for his hounding defense, he played eight seasons in the NBA and made the winning jumper in the seventh game of the Bullets' celebrated 1971 Eastern Division finals victory over the New York Knicks.
