Michael Phelps returned to the headlines this week, as the Rodgers Forge native prepares to come out of retirement and race in a Grand Prix event next week in Mesa, Ariz. (You didn't really believe he was finished after the 2012 Olympics, did you?) In honor of his splish-splash flip-flop, we turn back the clock 10 years to the early part of 2004, when Phelps was just an 18-year-old kid preparing for his second Olympic Games that summer in Athens. (He had competed four years prior but had yet to win an Olympic medal.) Here's a look back to that point when Phelps was just on the precipice of becoming an international superstar.
