His RBI total was eighth-best in the AL. Markakis was born on Nov. 17, 1983, in Glen Cove, N.Y. He attended Young Harris Junior College (Ga.), hitting .439 in 2003. Markakis also pitched at Young Harris, going 12-0 with a 1.68 ERA while leading all junior college pitchers with 160 strikeouts. Markakis was named Baseball America's second-best junior college prospect behind future Orioles teammate Adam Loewen. Markakis graduated from Woodstock High School in Ga. The Cincinnati Reds drafted him in 2001 and 2002, but he didn't sign. Markakis is of Greek descent and played for the Greek Olympic team during the 2004 games.
