3 at Duquesne struck
in a hit-and-run
Three members of Duquesne University's club hockey team were struck by a hit-and-run driver after an argument at a bar early yesterday in Pittsburgh. It is the second violent altercation involving Duquesne athletes this year. On Sept. 17, five basketball players were shot after an on-campus party. Timothy Fish, 22, was listed in fair condition at Mercy Hospital with a compound fracture and severe cut to his left leg that required surgery, according to police. Mike Heath, 22, was treated at Mercy for a neck injury, cuts and abrasions, and then released. Mark Heier, also 22, refused treatment. Hockey is a club sport at Duquesne, meaning it gets only partial funding and does not fall under NCAA guidelines. The three players got into an argument with three other people at the pub, but were separated by bar staff and left shortly afterward. As they walked across a parking lot, a passenger in a car asked what they were looking at and the driver drove at them, police said. Police had the name of one suspect, a police spokeswoman said.

Doping
LeMond advocates
criminal charges
Three-time Tour de France champion Greg LeMond wants athletes who cheat by using banned drugs to face criminal charges for defrauding the public and their sponsors. LeMond also told the World Anti-Doping Agency that athletes who confess or come forward with information that could undo doping networks should receive more lenient punishment, balancing the benefit of people coming clean with the need to penalize cheaters. "I believe in severe penalties, possibly even life bans," said LeMond.

Steroids
Bonds' trainer
returns to prison
Barry Bonds' personal trainer returned to prison for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating Bonds' alleged steroid use. Greg Anderson has twice been freed on technicalities. He was ordered to report after an appeals court last week upheld the entirety of his contempt-of-court citation. In 2003, Bonds testified before a federal grand jury probing steroid use that Anderson did not provide him with steroids. Authorities suspect Bonds is lying, and have subpoenaed Anderson.

18 schools support
Ohio State vs. O'Brien
Eighteen universities and the Big Ten, Pacific-10 and Big 12 conferences filed a brief in state appeals court supporting Ohio State in its bid to overturn a $2.4 million award to former men's basketball coach Jim O'Brien. They argue the Ohio Court of Claims' ruling that Ohio State improperly fired O'Brien limits their ability to comply with NCAA rules.
