U.S. GM not considering Clemens for Olympics
Roger Clemens isn't welcome on the U.S. Olympic baseball team.
U.S. general manager Bob Watson said yesterday that he isn't considering the right-hander, 45, for his roster for the Beijing Games. "We don't need that type of distraction," Watson said.
In addition to his duties as vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball, Watson is general manager of professional baseball operations for USA Baseball.
A seven-time Cy Young Award winner, Clemens was accused by his former trainer, Brian McNamee, of using performance-enhancing drugs. Clemens repeatedly denied the accusations.
In November, Clemens' agent, Randy Hendricks, said pitching in the Olympics was "something to consider."
• White Sox // MLB considers the blowup over blowup dolls in the Chicago clubhouse a team issue, not a league issue. Executive vice president for labor relations Rob Manfred said the league had discussions with the team after a player placed two nude blowup dolls in the clubhouse at Toronto but called it "fundamentally a club issue."
• Cardinals // Starter Mark Mulder has a mild rotator cuff strain of his left shoulder, causing St. Louis to stop his injury rehabilitation assignment. The Cardinals plan to rest Mulder, who is coming back from two shoulder operations, for seven to 10 days before re-evaluating him.
• Mets // Pedro Martinez is scheduled to throw a side session tomorrow in Florida, another step in the pitcher's rehabilitation from a strained left hamstring. Martinez threw a side session, and the Mets are waiting to see how he comes out of it before his next workout.
• Yankees // Third baseman Alex Rodriguez (strained right quadriceps) ran in the outfield, played catch, fielded grounders and took batting practice. He will continue with a similar routine over the next few days. Manager Joe Girardi said Rodriguez will not play in a rehab game until he has a magnetic resonance imaging next week.
GIANTS // Optioned P Brad Hennessey to Triple-A Fresno. Recalled P Billy Sadler from Fresno.
RED SOX // Assigned IF Alex Cora to Triple-A Pawtucket.
TWINS // Reinstated P Kevin Slowey from 15-day DL. Placed R Scott Baker on 15-day DL.
