His coach, Earl Banks, put it bluntly: "The team plays as he plays." <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="OREDU0000128" title="Morgan State University" href="/topic/education/colleges-universities/morgan-state-university-OREDU0000128.topic">Morgan State</a> won two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles and two bowls behind Lanier, a guard and middle linebacker who twice made Small College All-American. In 1965, he led a defense that allowed 34 points in nine games for the unbeaten Bears. Lanier starred with the Kansas City Chiefs and belongs to both the pro and college halls of fame.
