The Orioles made three roster moves Friday afternoon, including the long-anticipated promotion of Cuban outfielder Dariel Alvarez.
Alvarez, 26, hit .275 with 16 homers and 72 RBIs in 130 games at Triple-A Norfolk and was considered the club’s fifth-best prospect by Baseball America heading into this year.
To make room for him on the 25-man roster, the Orioles sent fellow Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia back to Norfolk. Urrutia hit .265 in 10 games with the Orioles, including a walk-off homer on Aug. 19.
But with the Orioles facing three consecutive left-handed starters versus the Rangers, it made more sense to have Alvarez’s right-handed bat available over Urrutia, a left-handed hitter. Urrutia will likely be back up at some point in September after rosters expand.
The Orioles also had another opening on their 25-man roster after demoting reliever Jorge Rondon on Thursday. That spot was filled by catcher Steve Clevenger, who was reinstated from the paternity list.
Clevenger’s wife, Tiffany, gave birth to the couple’s first child, daughter Peyton Lee, earlier this week.
The Orioles were late posting a lineup Friday afternoon, likely because they wanted to see how center fielder Adam Jones emerged from concussion tests. Jones ran into a wall in the first inning of Thursday’s game and left in the third inning, but was in the club's starting lineup.
Alvarez is also in it, playing right field, batting eighth and making his major league debut.
In other news, reliever Chaz Roe (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch simulated game Friday and is set for a minor league rehabilitation game Monday at either Frederick or Bowie with the hope that he’ll be activated Tuesday or Wednesday.
