Emanuel "The Tranzformer" Taylor lost by unanimous decision to undefeated Chris Algieri on Friday in a nationally televised 10-round bout in Huntington, N.Y.
Algieri, fighting in his hometown, landed the punch of the night in the fifth round, a big left uppercut that stunned Taylor. Algieri started landing big blows in the seventh round and bloodied Taylor in the eighth.
He took control in the ninth as Taylor (17-2) appeared to tire.
One judge scored the fight 98-92 in favor of Algieri (19-0), a former kickboxer who has 3 inches on Taylor. The other two judges scored the fight 97-93 for Algieri.
Before Friday, Taylor had had 12 knockouts in 18 fights since going pro in 2009, and his only loss came in a controversial split decision against Prenice Brewer in 2011.
