The Orioles rode to the 1979 World Series behind Flanagan, a gutsy left-hander with a sweeping curve and a devastating sinker. He went 23-9, pitched five shutouts and won the American League Cy Young Award. In 15 years here, he won 141 games, a world championship and the respect of a city that watched him pitch through pain. Flanagan died in 2011 of a self-inflicted gunshot.
