( Baltimore Sun photo / March 15, 2012 ) The first jockey to win 500 races in a year, Hawley did it while riding in Maryland. In December 1973 at Laurel Race Course, the 24-year-old Canadian broke Bill Shoemaker's record of 485 victories, which had stood for 20 years. A week later, on the same track, he won No. 500 and finished the year with 515. The Hall of Famer (6,449 wins) twice won the prestigious D.C. International at Laurel. |
