A fanatical work ethic made him one of the NFL's fabled split ends. Though myopic and slow, Berry caught a then-league-record 631 passes for the Colts at a time when defenders could punish would-be receivers. Johnny Unitas' star target, he ran crafty routes and had a championship-record 12 catches in Baltimore's 1958 sudden-death victory over the New York Giants. In 13 seasons, Berry fumbled once.
