Nazareth's Sage Karam missed his senior prom to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. On Wednesday, his racing crew and girlfriend Anna de Ferran, daughter of 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner Gil de Ferran, made it up to him.
The 19-year-old Karam, the reigning Indy Lights champion, was shocked when he walked into the garage after practice and found a different kind of spectacle just days before the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing." The entire area was decked out in island-themed decorations. There was music and dancing, and Karam and de Ferran took their official 'prom photos' in front of a stack of tires before he was crowned prom king.
Karam, driver of the No. 22 Dreyer and Reinbold-Kingdom Racing Chevrolet, will start on the last row for the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 25. The Nazareth Area High School senior qualified 31st with a four-lap average speed of 228.436 miles per hour.
Karam may have missed Nazareth High School's official prom, but recently told reporters he does plan on walking with his class for the June 10 graduation ceremony, hopefully wearing an Indy 500 champions ring.
