The Cavaliers came out on the winning end of a marathon match with Britton-Hecla, defeating the Braves 21-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-14 and 15-13. Roncalli coach Mandy Lee said the Cavaliers had to overcome a sluggish start, but once they did, everything started to fall into place.
“It was a very slow start, then the girls started talking and communicating and there was a big momentum shift,” Lee said. “They were like a different team.”
A lot of factors played into the Braves’ favor in the early games, Lee said, including Roncalli not getting their blocks up and being “a step behind” defensively. But all that changed when Roncalli pushed through for a 26-24 win in the third game.
“Once we got through the third game, the girls finally believed they could play with them, and could finish the games,” Lee said.
Hailey Kline notched 16 kills and Mariah Goetz added a dozen to pace the Roncalli attack. Kline also served up five aces on the night. Kate Heintzman contributed three ace serves and 23 set assists.
Lee said Roncalli’s middle hitters came through against Britton-Hecla when the team needed them to.
“It was nice to be able to use our middle hitters more than we have this season,” Lee said.
The Braves collected 37 kills on the evening, with 15 for Emily Bremmon and 10 for Emma Bennett.
Roncalli stayed unbeaten on the season, improving its record to 3-0 (2-0 NEC) while Britton-Hecla fell to 1-3 (0-2 NEC). Both teams will be in action at the Clark-Willow Lake Tournament on Saturday in Clark.
