Aberdeen Roncalli is in the middle of a crowded field of golf teams.
The Cavaliers are in fourth place after the first day of the South Dakota State A boys’ golf tournament at Spearfish Canyon Country Club on Monday. Roncalli carded a 335 after the first day.
“We are pleased with fourth place,” Roncalli coach Keith Hurley said, “but we certainly don’t feel we played as well as we could have today. I think we left a lot out there. Didn’t putt particularly well. The guys are a little disappointed with where they are standing right now.”
Lead-Deadwood has a strong hold on the top spot with a 311 after the first day. Then it gets crowded after that. Harrisburg is in second with a 328 and Dell Rapids is third with a 330. Sioux Falls Christian, Madison and Dakota Valley are all tied with 338s. Sisseton shot a 342 on the first day.
“I don’t think Lead-Deadwood is a runaway yet,” Hurley said. “When you look at the second place, there is probably six teams within 10 strokes of each other battling for second. That is going to be really, really competitive.”
Lead-Deadwood’s Gabe Dirksen is in first place in the individual standings with a 69. Sisseton senior Ryan Medhaug has some work to do if he is going to three-peat as the State A champ. Medhaug, who won the last two State A titles, scored a 74 and is tied for third place.
Roncalli’s Michael Duch and Andrew Welk are tied for 16th place after shooting 81s on Monday. Welk shot a 38 on the front nine, while Duch put together a solid back nine to score the 81.
“He was solid all day, but not quite as sharp as he would like,” said Hurley, adding that Duch went and spent some time on the putting green after Monday’s round. “He just didn’t feel like he putted the ball well today and that cost him a few strokes.”
Gabe Heller shot an 86, Keaton Deiter shot an 87 and Kory Schwan shot a 97 to round out the Cavaliers’ scores.
“One of the highlights for us today was probably Gabe Heller’s round,” Hurley said. “The young freshman comes out and shoots an 86. That was exciting to see him really play a solid round on a fairly difficult golf course. That was definitely one of the highlights for us as well.”
The State A golf tournament will conclude today.
