The defending State B champion Monarchs, winners of 55 straight matches, might actually be considered underdogs as they square off against unbeaten and top-rated Class AA Sioux Falls O’Gorman on Saturday.
“I think it’s actually better for us knowing that the pressure is probably more on them than us,” said Warner coach Kari Jung.
The showdown will be the final match during the Chester Challenge tournament.
“We have never played a AA school,” Jung said. “We’re looking at it as a great opportunity to get better.”
What makes matters more intriguing is that O’Gorman is one of the few teams around that can match Warner’s height at the net.
“I pulled up their roster. They’re huge,” Jung said. “They’re a lot like us in size, but I think their offense is quicker than ours so we are going to have to be playing sharp defensively.”
SFO actually has a big week of volleyball this week. The Knights played Sioux Falls Washington on Tuesday and are set to play defending State A champion Sioux Falls Christian this evening.
Jung said her players are excited about the chance to face O’Gorman.
“Most of them are more excited than nervous,” Jung said. “It’s just an opportunity for us to find some weaknesses that we need to work on throughout the season.”
So what about putting that 55-match winning streak on the line?
“I guess the winning streak, I don’t really care about that,” Jung said. “I’d much rather have games where it’s competitive and we can get better.”
