The Wildcats racked up 14 aces and 34 kills to fuel a 25-15, 25-20, 25-15 sweep.
“They have a strong serving team,” said Roncalli coach Mandy Lee. “They have a lot of energy on their team. They definitely came out swinging and came out strong.”
That said, Lee was happy with the way her players responded and battled throughout the match.
“I think our girls did a great job of holding their own,” Lee said.
Lee said the Cavaliers entered the match with a goal of blocking Northwestern at the net. The strategy worked in part as Roncalli finished the night with eight blocks.
“The blocking really was a strong point,” Lee said.
However, the Wildcats were able to find holes in that blocking scheme and put down nearly three dozen kills.
Jordon Peterson led the hitting assault with 16 kills, followed by Julia Sparling with 11.
Meanwhile, the hosts were also tough when they served the ball. Peyton Groft led Northwestern with four aces, and Christine Morgan and Jeanna Duncan each contributed three.
Roncalli was led by Hailey Kline with four kills and Keary Spraw with three. The Cavaliers also received a pair of aces from both Kate Heintzman and Mackenzie Martin.
Lee said her squad continues to be a work in progress.
“We’re still trying out some new things,” Lee said.
The Cavaliers had 35 digs led by Kline with nine.
Lee said defense has also been a point of emphasis.
“That’s one of the things that we know that we need to work on,” Lee said.
Roncalli, 5-4 on the season, plays host to Redfield-Doland at 8 p.m. Thursday at Roncalli Gym. The Cavaliers then head to a tournament in Sioux Falls on Saturday where they will face Dell Rapids, Sioux Valley and an opponent to be determined.
