Two Aberdeen Central volleyball assistant coaches already have prior experience with the program.
Freshman assistant coach Brittany Bauer played for the Golden Eagles in 2006 and 2007, and junior varsity assistant Tina Birgen was the team’s head coach in 1999 and 2000. Both coaches joined the high school volleyball staff this season.
Bauer, who was coached by Greg Murley, graduated from Central High School in 2007. While attending Northern State, Bauer coached middle school volleyball in Aberdeen. After graduating from Northern, Bauer served as the head volleyball coach at Castlewood for a season. She teaches algebra I and II at the high school.
Some of her current volleyball players are aware of her background.
“Some of them know I played,” said Bauer. “They see me in the pictures in the hallway and ask me about it. I think it gives me credibility because they might think, ‘Oh, she does know what she’s talking about.’ ”
Pictures of Aberdeen Central teams and athletes line the hallway that runs past the locker rooms at Golden Eagles Arena.
“It’s been a little different, but it’s been fun. It’s very interesting seeing the difference between coach Greg Murley then and coach Dennis Northrup now. I like it. They’ve been very welcoming. They’ve been great,” said Bauer.
Her freshman squad lost just two matches this season.
Birgen, a former Northern State and Northwestern High School volleyball player, accepted a teaching and coaching job at Central this school year. She teaches physical education and health at Central.
Birgen did not accompany the Golden Eagles to the state tournament for family reasons.
