Dane Maher had the first qualified ride of the night. He also tied for the high-point ride of the night.
Maher and Clay Hindman were two of 12 bull riders that qualified for the short go-round at the Coors Bull Riding Classic at the Holum Expo Center on Friday. The two bull riders then scored 91s to come away with the high point scores during the first night of the event.
Maher, a Timber Lake graduate, scored a 91 in the short go-round. It was the first 90-point plus ride of the night.
“They told me when that bull goes right, he is really good,” Maher said. “So I was pretty tickled when he came around the right, it was fun.”
Not to be outdone, Hindman then scored a 91 just one ride after Maher.
“I didn’t get to see Dane’s ride, because I was busy getting on my bull,” said Hindman, who is from Pierre, “but I’m glad that I can just put up a 91. That is great.”
The second night of the Coors Bull Riding Classic will take place at 7 tonight at the Holum Expo Center.
There were 35 bull riders on Friday night. The first six riders on the night bucked off before Maher scored the first qualified ride of the night with an 83 in the long go-round.
“The first bull felt pretty flat,” Maher said, “but he was fast.”
Casey Stirling of New Underwood had the high-point ride in the long go-round with an 89. Hindman was among those as well as he scored an 84 in the first round.
“He was just a good bull,” Hindman said. “I knew him, but that was first time I had been on him. He was just a little tricky to get by.”
Joe Burgess was the only other bull rider to score in the short go-round as he scored an 88 on his bull. The bull riding stock was provided by the Mosbrucker Rodeo Company.
“I thought the bulls were pretty good,” Maher said. “There was a few I would like to draw around, but for the most part everything looked pretty even and everything was pretty good to get on.”
